Overheard in Manhattan
“On the streets of Manhattan, people talk loud enough to be overheard, giving aural glimpses into their lives. Their cryptic soundbites can be startling, evocative, funny, disturbing - and intersect in unexpected ways.”
Walking in Manhattan, people talk. To their phones, to other people, to the air at large. I couldn't help but overhear. And then transcribe. And then share. I love to imagine the lives behind these cryptic soundbites. Maybe you will, too. Making the slides for this movie, I varied typefaces and layout to capture the feeling tone of each speaker. To minimize editorializing, I did no cutting or reordering. (When the pieces seem to talk to each other, well, that is their own doing.) The sound is a collage extracted from my sightseeing iPhone videos.
